“I abuse alcohol and/or drugs to boost my confidence.

This item is often chosen by individuals seeking counselling support in Edmonton for confidence issues. In an attempt to alleviate discomfort and anxiety many people abuse alcohol and/or drugs to lower their arousal level.

While addictions do not necessarily develop, the use of substances to build confidence clearly interferes with the development of healthy life skills and can build and/or strengthen the identity of "addict."

Substances initially lower inhibition and can provide a false sense of social ease and/or escape. However, the subconscious mind develops a false association between substances and positive experiences. This is a clear example of original intention vs. manifested outcomes.
